Kentucky Speleological Survey

Karst-O Rama Meeting

Great Saltpetre Cave Preserve

June 24, 2007

Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order at10:10 AM by President Preston Forsythe.

President’s report:

Preston Forsythe announced that the Greater Cincinnati Grotto had donated $500.00 to the Survey for the purchase of a laptop, and suggested that a certificate of appreciation be presented to the Grotto.

Treasurer’s report:

Jim Currens provided the treasurer’s report:

The Survey treasury currently holds $ 2,298.28,

There are 10 paid organizational members, and 14 paid regular members.

Committee’s reports:

Randy Paylor reported cave data requests.

The first was too general to be accepted.

The second was from Pat Kambesis for Warren Co. Gott Fire Dept. Cave Rescue Training in Pruett Saltpetre Cave. The only problem seemed to be was that this cave is a bat cave and its use would require proper consideration and limited access.

Don Conover reported on the last paper caving session.

He observed that the paper session crews have done a good job with the A,B,C,  and X,Y,Z folders in the filing cabinets, but the middle folders remain little worked on.

Old Business:

Minutes for the April 15, 2007 meeting were approved.

Preston Forsythe reminded us to thank Dick Blenz for the Kentucky cave material when we see him at the Indiana NSS Convention.

New Business:

The Tax Exempt Status, 501 (c):

Jim Greer and Jim Currens discussed the tax status of the KSS, and it was decided that the status of the June 2006 application needs to be checked on.

The new KSS Laptop:

Bill Walden will research which laptop would best fulfill our needs, and make his recommendations to the vice president.

Angelo George Data:

Steve Gentry recommended a piecemeal accumulation of this data as the most prospective route to take. Steve and Jim Greer will pursue this.

Carter Cave area data:

Don Conover explained that we already have this material in the Dick Blenz data. Don has a computer disc with these maps.

Newsletter update:

Randy Paylor has a newsletter ready, it will be e-mailed and paid members will get a hard copy.

Brochure update:

Don Conover has brochures. The color copy is nearly as cheap as noncolor.

Darrell Adkins suggested getting 1000 for the convention.

KSS booth display:

Randy said that he would bring the display to the NSS Convention.

Number of KSS meetings per year:

It was decided that this number remain at four.

Should we be an NSS Survey?

Jim Currens informed us that as the KSS Articles of the Constitution now stands, if the KSS dissolves, its data will go to the Kentucky Geological Survey. Preston Forsythe suggested that being an NSS Survey would give us more exposure but, Don Conover pointed out that some of the donors may not want their work to go to the NSS.

Open Floor:

The next paper session will be in Lexington on Aug.12, 2007.

The next meeting will be at Bill Walden’s home on Oct. 28, 2007.

The meeting was adjourned.
