Minutes from the July 17, 2006 Meeting at KOR
Thanks to all of you who attended. We had 17 at
the meeting on Sunday, by far the largest crowd I remember in recent years.
The majority of our directors and officers were there. Those of you who were
not at K-O-R, please know that you were missed and that we need everyone's help
to make this a successful organization. Randy Paylor's KSS Cave Database Map
was impressive and we appreciate all of the time that went into that
presentation. The KSS has information on file for 4437 caves, with good
locations for 3337 caves. Bill Walden's Redmond Creek and Sandy Springs maps
were also interesting and show the many hours of surveying that have gone
into those projects.
We want to publicly thank Jim Greer for the
Treasurer's Report. The group is not wealthy but we are alive and have an
amount on hand for our current needs. We discussed ways to increase that
money. One way is through publications. We need writers, editors, reviewers,
proofreaders and others who can support publication of material that would be
interesting to cavers concerned with KY. This has worked for Texas, W. VA.,
and TN. Thanks to Jim and Cat Kennedy for many helpful comments.
By the way if you were not there, on Sat. evening
Jim Kennedy presented an entertaining "Caves w/o Bats" program. He
also handed out copies of an interesting Eastern Cave Bat Booklet.
Jim Greer updated us on his excellent work he has
been doing (along with Randy's contribution) on our tax exempt status and
filing of our annual state report. Our 501 (c) status was in question but we
are making progress on correcting that. We are now waiting on the IRS.
A main topic was the scheduling of more data
organization sessions. Working with our cave data is our main mission. The
next "work" session is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 10th, 10
am at the KGS Bldg. in Lexington. This is tentatively based on Jim's and
Randy's schedule so we hope this day will work. Stayed tuned. This is also an
opportunity to see where we are and what we have.
At future regional events we need to have a table
and booth highlighting the KSS. And, along this publicity direction,
Randy is working on an electronic newsletter.
Oct. 28, 29 will be the dates for our fall meeting
and that will be at Bill Walden's lakeview home in Wayne Co. This will be
an opportunity to see a few of the wonderful caves in that area. On that Sat.
we may do short hops in several of the classic caves along our se state
border. On Sunday morning we will have our meeting. More on this as the date
approaches.
And, that is a brief summary of the summer KSS
meeting.
This meeting was followed by an Ohio Valley
Region, OVR, caver meeting representing the states of Ohio, Indiana and
Kentucky.
Cavingly,
Preston
